I had a thought tonight as my wife was reading “The Night Before Christmas” to my daughter. Wouldn’t it be a great idea to have primary students illustrate the story and have older kids key in the story (a verse per student)?

Then I thought that the primary students could illustrate the story and the junior students could key in the story as a keyboarding exercise. . The illustrations could be scanned, and the intermediate students could take the text files and use them to create hypertext pages as a sort of HTML Christmas storybook. The individual could be linked and posted on the web, or burned onto CD for students to take home.

As I thought about it more, it became obvious that such an activity need not be limited to Christmas stories. They could just as easily be fables, or any other public-domain stories. In Catholic schools it could be Bible stories. What a cool way to have all students in the school working toward a common goal, with level having an activity suited to them.

The most obvious application is the one that came to me last; students could create their own stories. Either individually, or as a class, the primary students could create the stories and illustrations. The other divisions could then work their own brand of magic.

The obvious question: Is this a practical idea, or is it one of those goofy ideas that bounce around in our heads and never come to fruition? Only one way to find out…
